About Our Foster Program:
Foster Parents provide temporary care for puppies and dogs in their MD/PA/DE area homes.
Some animals only need a home for two weeks, others may need three months.
By offering your time, energy,
and home to an animal in need, you prepare the animal for adoption into a permanent,
oving home. RLR is always looking for foster homes,
especially throughout the busy spring and summer seasons.
The more Foster Parents we have, the more lives we will be able to save. All dogs/puppies
entering fostercare will go through a 10 day quarantine after leaving the shelter,
prior to entering a foster home. Temperament, health and needs assessments are conducted at this time.
We try our best to match foster dogs with a foster home that will fit their needs most appropriately.
Four of the most common reasons for animals to be selected for foster care are:
1. Puppies are too young to be adopted.
2. Dogs who are nursing their litter of puppies and need to raise them in a home environment where they can all receive proper socialization.
3. Dogs that are being treated for an illness such as upper respiratory infection or kennel cough and require daily medications and TLC.
4. Perfectly healthy, well tempered dogs are often sent into foster care as a temporary space solution so they can receive one on one care and attention.
Due to RLR not having a shelter at this time, foster care is our only option in saving more lives.
RLR provides veterinary care, animal behaviorist support and training, any needed supplies/medicine
for foster animals and lots of support to foster care volunteers.
Foster care volunteers provide food, time, shelter, training reinforcement and lots of love.
How foster care works
1. RLR receives an animal that is not ready to be put up for adoption or needs a warm place to rest while a forever home is found.
RLR frequently receives very young animals that are not ready for adoption
and needing immediate foster care and animals that have been abused/neglected and need rehabilitation in a home to learn to trust.
No aggressive dogs are accepted into our program.
2. Foster homes are contacted. If you are called to foster an animal and cannot do it for any reason,
we will find another foster home and call you the next time.
It's always okay to say you are not available. We will work with your schedule to make the most appropriate placement.
3. The animal goes to the foster home until ready for adoption. You may need to bring the animal to RLR Representative
to get checked periodically by the RLR veterinarian or to receive any necessary vaccines or treatments.
We may ask that you take your foster dog to adoption events. This is appreciated, but not required.
4. We ask that you keep in contact with us about what you feel is the best placement for your foster pet.
We ask that you report on its health, likes, dislikes, etc.
5. The animal is returned to RLR for adoption OR the foster home will have the opportunity
to screen approved adopters to see if the perfect home has been found.
We always take the foster parents observations into consideration when placing an animal.
Animals coming out of foster care are spayed/neutered as age appropriate unless already done so,
and then placed up for adoption as soon as all parties agree that they are ready.
6. RLR has the final determination in the placement of the dog/puppy.
7. If the foster care arrangement is not working out on behalf of the foster home,
we ask that you allow up to 7 days for RLR to reclaim the foster pet and open a space in another foster home.
8. The foster family will have the first opportunity to adopt their foster dog, if they so desire.
We do still require an adoption fee and any other screening that may be done during normal adoption placement.
We do ask that the foster family notify the rescue of this decision as soon as possible
so that we do not use our limited volunteer hours processing applications on a dog that is not longer available for adoption.
Vet Care or Misc Expenses:
RLR needs to pre-authorize any expense that the foster home may incur if the foster home expects to be reimbursed.
Checks are issued monthly for these costs.
The foster family will be given a list of contact information to the members of RLR that are authorized to give this consent.
In the case of an extreme health emergency and no one can be reached in a timely manner,
we advise you to seek the appropriate medical attention.
We will reimburse the costs upon review by our Board of Directors.
- Vet Care- Foster homes shall only use Veterinarians within our program for the foster dogs medical needs.
Our Vets allow us to place all debt on accounts, as we raise funds to pay off the bills.
Any financial help you would be willing to offer towards these bills is appreciated, but not required.
- Misc Expenses: This would include, but not limited to food, treats, leads, collars, crate, bedding or toys.
Again, RLR needs to pre-authorize any expense
that the foster home may incur if the foster home expects to be reimbursed.
Receipts will be requested upon payment towards goods.
- Irresponsibilty or Neglect of Duties: on the foster homes part, such as a dog fight where the foster dog is injured,
a foster dog is hit by a car, lost or the foster dog is ill/ injured
and it is not reported in a timely manner, will become the financial responsibility of the foster home.
We expect that you will care for our dogs as if they are your own and take every precaution to keep them safe from harm.
